Case Study: SimilarWeb

Launching and Maintaining SimilarWeb’s QA Automation Program

Similar Web case studySimilarWeb is a global leader in market intelligence, helping companies discover, decide and deploy their digital strategies by revealing the data for any website or mobile app.

Thanks to their wealth of data, SimilarWeb insights are often used in leading publications including Bloomberg, BusinessInsider, TechCrunch and AdWeek.

Their insights help businesses, publishers, marketers and analysts to benchmark performance against competitors. By enabling the comparison of website and app traffic and engagement, SimilarWeb helps companies define and execute their digital strategies and discover new opportunities.

Business Challenge

The goal for SimilarWeb was to move to test automation to ramp up efficiency within their QA and Dev teams. With no automation in place, they were looking for an established provider who could help launch their automation program, and, in turn, take their production efforts to the next level.

Ultimately, the challenge was to build an automation framework based on Amazon’s cloud platform – a fast, cost effective, but technically challenging option. SimilarWeb was also looking to partner with an onshore QA automation expert in Israel rather than take their automation efforts offshore.

Galil Software Solution

SimilarWeb looked at a number of outsourcing options, but realized that Galil Software’s Automation services solution, in terms of overhead, efficiency, and cost effectiveness, was the choice for them.

Galil Software commenced work with SimilarWeb in November 2014, and quickly expanded to a team of 8.

Initially, the Galil implemented an automation framework that has proven itself time and time again with other customers; maintenance is ensured on CI test runs, and there is an excellent coverage of tests. With a limited number of machines employed in the automation program, the overall number of test runs has been greatly reduced.

Largely due to its proven automation prowess, the Galil automation engineers are now integrated into each Development team. This ensures even greater efficiency, with the automation teams aware of what is happening in real-time with the product (they are also part of scrums and sprints), and enabling them to write tests before production.

Customer Benefits

The major benefit for SimilarWeb has been its ability to hand over responsibility for launching and maintaining its QA Automation needs to an onshore team who speak the same language and are in the same time zone.

Their automation operations – located in the Galil Software offices in Nazareth – are one hour’s drive from their R&D headquarters, ensuring they benefit from all of Galil’s automation services and skills, including:

  • Quick launch of technologically challenging automation services.
  • Framework maintenance and overall improvements in test coverage with limited resources.
  • Quick and easy expansion of the automation team as demand dictates.
  • Close proximity – just an hour away – ensures that even though the team is located at Galil Software’s site, SimilarWeb recognize the Galil team as a full extension of their own QA and Dev teams. This helps SimilarWeb virtually eliminate any risks and hidden costs often associated with offshore providers.

When SimilarWeb started looking for a test automation solution, we checked a number of different in-house and external options. Galil Software was the obvious choice.

Galil’s expert knowledge and skills in the automation domain, together with Galil’s automation framework, enabled us to implement automation infrastructure in Amazon cloud quickly and efficiently, with a nice ROI.

The Galil team is currently an integral part of SimilarWeb’s QA operations, working closely with both QA and Developers to develop and execute automation requirements.

After working with Galil for almost a year and a half there is no doubt we made the right choice.
